Written off. Canceled. Boundaries installed. Calls and texts ignored. Invitations withheld. Labels applied. Grace denied. Doors closed. Bridges burned. Moments avoided.
There are plenty of methods we use to separate ourselves from those around us. For some of us, the names from our past could fill pages under each of these categories. For others, the list is smaller but still represents impactful moments from tougher times behind us.
All of us have names on the list.
I have plenty. I’ve sat reflecting on those who immediately come to mind, and my heart aches for the pain that’s been caused and experienced. For the times of struggle, misjudgment, misunderstanding, and hurt.
I know God is clear in addressing the root of what keeps people from my past on these lists: anger, bitterness, unforgiveness, jealousy, idolatry, envy.
It’s sin. Plain and simple.
God didn’t design us to live life constantly adding names to a book of people we no longer do life with. What a messed-up world we live in, and what horrible, sin-filled hearts we have to consistently fight against.
This week, I’m taking this list and giving each person to God. I’m exercising forgiveness where needed. I’m praying for their well-being and protection. I’m praying for their spiritual lives and that God will bring healthy community into their circles.
If there’s anger, I’m asking for peace. If there’s frustration, I’m asking for calm. If there’s hurt, I’m asking for forgiveness. If there’s sin, I’m seeking repentance.
This isn’t an easy part of the journey. Having to look back at the ugliness of the paths we’ve been on is no fun. But sometimes, the only way forward is to stop, turn around, and make sure you’re not dragging unnecessary weight behind you.
If you feel led to join me this week, hit reply and let me know so we can pray for each other in the coming days.
And finally, know that God has mercy for you and for those on your list. He loves us all the same.
