Confliction in human mistakes of day to day life is highlighted as a center point in David Dunn’s new song “Poison”. If you’ve ever felt like you’re not enough then let the melodic synths and simple percussion wash over you, highlighting the fact that you can’t ever be enough until you seek refuge in the glory of God. Set clearly and firmly, the contrast between lyrics of the chorus highlight the grace of God despite the human failure: “(Oh-ooh, oh-oh-ooh) I turn my beauty into ashes (Oh-ooh, oh-oh-ooh) You turn the water into wine ” God is perfect in every way and it’s only in his perfection can you escape the paradoxical imperfection of your own life.
Truth is what humans seek to find, a solution to the pain that is self-inflicted. So if you want to feel a connection, “Poison” is a must. Truth echoes through the song; and even when you know better, day in and day out, we find ourselves constantly trying to fill an eternal hole that can only be walled up in the firmness of Jesus and faith in something unfailing, a love bigger than ourselves. Our own anger with ourselves and the mistakes we make, can only be placated in the forever lasting love of Christ.
The title itself is poetry. Juxtaposed with the humanity of society, it’s easy to identify that something like poison as hurtful and serves no place in the temple of your body. The song then pushes the listener to challenge themselves in the day to day of their own unique circumstance. It becomes harder to see what’s poison in the real world. What happens when the poison is less obvious, or tastes sweet? What happens when the poison in your life temporarily fills the void in your heart? What vices and “poison” have control over your life, and what happens if you don’t seek change? The answer, To quote David Dunn, “beauty into ashes.”
Lyrics
So sureThe irony of thatis making me laughKinda
So sureI know what is trueSo I should know what to doWhat to doI need my
My head and heartTo not be so far apartCause they rarely agreeWhen the pressure is on
I say I trust YouBut do I really trust You
Seems likeThe irony of thisIs making me missYou God
Seems likeI can lie to myselfBetter then anyone elseThat i know
caught in my own undertowAnd it wont let me goCause I made it myselfWith the poison I chokeddown
And I really don’t want itBut I really do want it
I keep on sipping on the poisonYou are the honey on the vineI turn my Beauty into ashesYou turn the water into wine
I keep hating what I do but I love itI keep loving what I do but I hate it
Cause I don’t really know who to beCan you please take this cup from me
